My love for the outdoors, our home, and the surrounding forest here in Maryhill, combined with my constant curious and inventive mind, is what got me started producing maple syrup.
I grew up in Maryhill, and after eight years of marriage and three kids later, I was able to purchase and move my young family, back into my childhood home. One of my most favourite things to do here (along with cross country skiing and skating on our pond) is walking the grounds of the adjacent forest! One spring, after eyeing up several particularly grand and beautiful maple trees on my walk, I decided I wanted to try to make our own maple syrup!
In just three seasons, making maple syrup became my passion and my production morphed from using just ten buckets to tap the trees, supplying only family and a few friends with my home made maple syrup, to installing lines on several maple trees, and promoting my maple syrup nationwide.
There have been a few trials and errors along the way, a number of all-nighters boiling sap, and it took a bit of fine tuning to get the consistency and clarity just right! I have also learnt an incredible amount during this time about: the trees, the environment, the conditions, the techniques and procedures, as well as the various grades of maple syrup, amongst others. To keep up with demands, we have branched out with local, maple syrup producers, to bottle what has resulted in our high quality, pure Ontario grade A Maple Syrup.
What started as a one-person hobby is now a family business! All five of us are contributing to the business in many different ways. Myself, Tyler; at the helm of the business, my son, Odin; as photographer, my oldest daughter, Raven; web page creator and manager, my youngest daughter, Lea; as taste tester and assisting with many miscellaneous tasks, and my wife; Gerd, assisting me with record keeping, sales and promotions.
What sets us apart, and what we are really excited about, is that our bottles have the logos applied by hand and then fired into the glass (at temperatures up to 1000°F).
